Letters from Kirsten: Simple Summer Activities for Kids That Actually Keep Them Busy

I don’t know about you, but this time of year always feels a little wild over here.

Between track meets, field trips, dress-up days, concerts, and trying to keep up with normal life, May somehow becomes complete chaos every single year. And then suddenly… summer arrives.

As moms, there can be so much pressure to make summer feel magical for our kids. Social media can make it seem like we need color-coded bucket lists, elaborate crafts, or perfectly planned activities every day.

But honestly, some of the things my kids loved most when they were little were incredibly simple.

So today I wanted to share a few easy summer activities and outdoor play ideas that worked really well for us over the years. Most of them are inexpensive, low-pressure, and don’t require a huge setup. Just simple ways to help your kids get outside, use their imagination, and stay busy for a little while.

Anything With Water Is Usually a Win

If there’s one thing I learned early on, it’s that water makes almost every activity more exciting.

Water tables, sprinklers, kiddie pools, little play sinks that recycle water… all of those were huge hits in our house. Even just letting the kids “wash” the car, their bikes, or their riding toys could buy me a surprising amount of time outside.

And honestly, so many outdoor toys can be found secondhand at garage sales or on Facebook Marketplace, which made summer activities feel a lot more manageable for us financially too.

Ice Excavation Was Always a Favorite

This one feels extra magical when kids are little.

I would freeze tiny toys like dinosaurs or figurines into ice cube trays or containers of water, then give the kids warm water and paintbrushes to help melt the ice and “rescue” the toys inside.

It sounds so simple, but activities like this would keep my kids entertained way longer than I expected.

Taking the Mess Outside Helps Everyone

One of my favorite parenting tricks during the summer was simply moving messy activities outdoors.

We’d mix food coloring with water and let the kids “paint” the sidewalk or driveway with paintbrushes. Chalk paint was another fun one.

There’s something about outdoor messes that just feels less stressful. Cleanup becomes spraying things down with a hose instead of scrubbing your kitchen table afterward.

The Chalk Road Activity Was a Big Hit

This was one of my personal favorites. I would draw large roads all over the driveway or sidewalk with chalk, and then the kids would create the rest of the town themselves. They’d draw restaurants, schools, stores, playgrounds, or whatever places they were interested in at the time.

Then they’d ride trikes or scooters through their little town pretending to visit all the different places. It was simple, but it sparked hours of make-believe play.

Sometimes Old Toys Just Need a New Location

One thing I noticed over the years is that kids don’t always need brand-new toys. Sometimes they just need a new way to use the toys they already have.

One fun thing we did was stick Magna-Tiles onto our metal garage door so the kids could build vertically outside instead of just on the floor indoors. That tiny change somehow made the activity feel brand new again.

Riding Toys Were Life-Changing for Me

Little Tikes cars, wagons, trikes, scooters, Strider bikes… we used all of them constantly.

At one point, I even tied a wagon to one of the ride-on cars with a jump rope so the kids could pull toys and treasures around the yard.

Kids love feeling capable and independent, and those kinds of activities naturally encouraged movement and creativity without me needing to overcomplicate things.

The Simple Summer Activities Are Usually the Ones They Remember

Honestly, some of the activities my kids loved most were the really classic ones:

sprinklers
hopscotch
sidewalk chalk
picnics
playground meetups
baby pools
park hopping
popsicles outside after dinner

I think we sometimes put pressure on ourselves to create huge memorable moments, but so often it’s the ordinary things that stick with our kids most.

Not Every Kid Likes the Same Things

Something I’ve learned as a mom is that every child plays differently.

Some kids love imaginative play. Others really thrive with movement and sports.

If your child isn’t super into pretend play, things like basketball hoops, soccer goals, rollerblades, obstacle courses, or street hockey gear can be amazing options too.

The goal isn’t creating the “perfect” summer. It’s simply finding small rhythms that help your kids stay curious, creative, and connected.

You Don’t Have to Fill Every Minute

And maybe this is the reminder I needed most myself…

You do not have to entertain your kids every second of the summer to be a good mom.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is meet another mom at the park, grab a coffee at a play place, or let your kids run around while you take a breath for a minute.

Motherhood feels lighter when we stop trying to do it all alone.
