Spring Clean: Dishwasher and Washing Machine

Spring Clean: Dishwasher and Washing Machine

Appliances in your home are working overtime these days. While we are home more making things extra dirty, it is also the perfect time to spring clean and kill some germs. Today we are tackling just a couple of maybe not-so-obvious cleans that need some attention: how to clean your dishwasher drain and how to clean your front loading washing machine.

We can't even take the credit for this inspiration - if you follow @gocleanco this is old news, and she has a million other tips and tricks to clean everything else. She loves bleach, so if you are chemical-free or limit them, you will have to do some subbing, but still great reminders and knowledge of this items and places we don't even think about!

How to Clean Dishwasher Drain

What you'll need:
Bleach (or other cleaner of choice)
Brush
Rag or cloth
Gloves

Instructions:

Remove bottom rack

mom cleaning tips and tricks - dishwasher

Remove screen and filter (not all dishwashers have removable filters)

Gently rinse and scrub screen and filter (ummm gross!)

Pour bleach into dishwasher

Scrub everywhere including hinges and door - use a cloth and push down to hard to reach places

Put everything back, run 1 cup of bleach in bottom for the longest hottest cycle

My dishwasher is probably just less than 2 years old - so it really hasn't collected too much grime, but that filter was still yucky. I also like to routinely wipe down/disinfect the outside of my dishwasher - it is stainless steel so about once a month I also use a stainless steel cleaner on all my kitchen appliances and they look brand new!

How to Clean Front Loading Washing Machine

What you'll need:
Bleach
Brush
Rag or cloth
Gloves

FYI: I did not have the right brush for all the nooks and crannies of the seal/washer compartments which made it very difficult - I am going to go go back in once I get one that will fit (or an old tooth brush???). I still took some photos to show you though! Highly recommend checking out @gocleanco highlights for this one. It is way grosser than you think, and you are gonna wanna clean it all!

Instructions:

Pull seal away (both layers!) and pour bleach in.

Scrub with brush

Dry the inner/outer seal with rag/paper towel to soak up excess moisture

Use brush and bleach/water to scrub door and the rest of the inside

Take out soap tray and pieces, scrub the pieces (don't forget the bottoms! and all up in that compartment

*I couldn't get that third blue piece out, will do that when I get a better brush.

Run rinse or "sanitize" cycle.
