Water Safety Starts Before You Jump In: Lessons from Swim Instructor Juli Higer

Water Safety Starts Before You Jump In: Lessons from Swim Instructor Juli Higer

There’s nothing quite like summertime with little ones. From afternoons at the neighborhood pool to weekends at the lake and backyard sprinkler fun, water often becomes the center of some of childhood’s sweetest memories.

But along with all the fun comes an important responsibility: helping children build confidence around water while keeping safety a top priority.

In this episode of Rooted Conversations, Kirsten Huebner sat down with swim instructor, educator, and grandmother Juli Higer to discuss water safety, swim lessons, and the skills that can help children feel more comfortable in and around the water. With years of experience teaching children of all ages and abilities, Juli shared valuable insight into creating positive water experiences for kids.

Here are some of the biggest water safety takeaways every parent can keep in mind this summer.

Water Safety Begins with Awareness

Drowning accidents can happen quickly, which is why intentional supervision and preparation are so important.

One of the most important safety habits families can practice is active supervision. This means having a designated adult whose only responsibility is watching children around water - whether you’re at a pool, lake, beach, or even near a backyard water feature.

Avoid distractions like phones, conversations, or assuming someone else is watching. A few intentional minutes of focused attention can make a major difference when it comes to keeping little ones safe.

Building Confidence Starts Earlier Than You Think

Water safety doesn’t have to start with formal swim lessons. Parents can begin creating positive water experiences from an early age.

Simple activities during bath time can help babies and toddlers become familiar with water in a comfortable environment. Letting little ones splash, play, and slowly experience new sensations can help build confidence over time.

The goal isn’t to rush swimming milestones. It’s to help children develop comfort and familiarity so water feels safe and approachable.

Floating Is a Skill Every Child Should Practice

One of the most valuable skills children can learn in the water is how to roll onto their back and float.

Floating gives children the ability to pause, take a breath, and stay calm if they ever find themselves in an unexpected situation. Instead of immediately panicking, they have a skill they can rely on while waiting for help.

Practicing floating regularly helps children become more comfortable with their bodies in the water and builds an important foundation for swimming.

Every Child Learns Best When They Feel Safe

Swim lessons are about much more than learning strokes.

For many children, the first step is simply becoming comfortable with a new environment, a new instructor, and new skills. A supportive and encouraging approach can help children feel safe enough to try.

Look for lessons that prioritize patience, confidence-building, and positive experiences. When children feel secure, they’re more willing to learn and grow.

Progress Looks Different for Every Child

Every child learns water skills at their own pace.

Some kids may jump right in and feel comfortable immediately, while others may need more time before they’re ready to put their face in the water or practice new skills. Both experiences are completely normal.

Children with different abilities, including those with autism or Down syndrome, may also benefit from individualized approaches that meet them where they are. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s progress.

Making This Summer a Safe One

Water safety skills are built through consistency and practice.

Talking about water rules, practicing safe habits, and continuing lessons throughout the year can help children develop confidence and awareness that lasts beyond summer.

Small conversations and repeated experiences help reinforce that water can be fun while still deserving respect.

Summer is a time for adventure, connection, and making memories together. While parents can’t remove every risk, they can take steps to prepare their children with the knowledge and confidence they need.
