Burp cloths, swaddles, a diaper bag, a baby carrier, feeding supplies, and safe sleep necessities. Once those everyday items are covered, you can always add the extras later.

2. Build your registry around your lifestyle.

One of the best pieces of advice we heard was to stop asking, "What does everyone else have?" and start asking, "What will work best for our family?"

Do you plan to travel often? Do you have a small nursery? Will grandparents be helping with childcare? Every family's routine looks a little different, and your registry should reflect that. The products you'll love most are usually the ones that make your everyday life a little easier.

3. Think beyond the newborn stage.

Those sleepy newborn days don't last long, so don't feel like every item on your registry has to be for the first few weeks of life.

5. Don't forget the everyday basics.

When you're dreaming about decorating the nursery, it's easy to overlook the items you'll use the most.

Be sure to include everyday essentials like diapers, wipes, baby wash, washcloths, and postpartum recovery items. They may not be the most exciting gifts to unwrap, but they're often the ones you'll appreciate most once you're home with your baby.

One helpful tip from our team: if you're registering for diapers, don't load up on newborn and size 1. Babies usually move through those sizes quickly, while size 3 tends to last much longer.

6. Keep clothing to a minimum.

If there's one thing experienced moms know, it's this: people love buying baby clothes.

You'll likely receive plenty of adorable outfits whether they're on your registry or not. Instead, use that valuable registry space for practical gear and everyday essentials that people might not think to purchase on their own.

That said, our team unanimously recommends registering for plenty of zip-up sleepers, especially the ones with built-in fold-over mittens. They're simple, cozy, and incredibly convenient during those first few months.

7. Register for the gift you'll use every day.

Sometimes it feels strange adding a higher-priced item to your registry, but don't be afraid to include something you know will make a difference.

One mom on our team says her nursery rocking chair was one of the best gifts she's ever received. Her friends went in on it together, and years later, it's still where bedtime stories are read, babies are comforted, and quiet moments are shared.

If there's a piece you'll truly use every day, it's worth adding.

8. Trust us. You need more burp cloths.

This might have been the most unanimous answer we received.

Every mom on our team wished she'd had even more burp cloths.

Keep them in the nursery, by your favorite chair, in the diaper bag, in the car, and anywhere else you spend time with your baby. You'll be amazed how often you reach for one, and having extras throughout the house saves countless trips to the laundry room.

9. Make life easier for future you.

Some of the best registry tips aren't about buying more. They're about planning ahead.

One mom shared her favorite nighttime hack: layer your crib mattress with a mattress protector, fitted sheet, another mattress protector, and a second fitted sheet. If there's a middle-of-the-night accident, you can simply remove the top layer and head right back to bed.

She also recommends having at least two or three fitted crib sheets and mattress protectors on hand. Future you will be so glad you did.

10. Ask another mom for help.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, don't build your registry alone.

Reach out to a friend, sister, cousin, or another mom you trust and ask them to look it over. Most experienced parents love sharing what they actually used and what they could have skipped.
